Several years ago, Callaway introduced a series of titanium fairway woods dubbed the Hawk Eve VFT Fairway Woods. They were touted for their larger, lighter heads and 'Variable Face Thickness' technology. Sounded good so I bought. I started with the 3 and 5 woods, later adding the 7 wood. No small purchase as they sold for $399.00 each at that time.After months of play, I discovered VFT fairway woods rock! They are longer than average, durable and very forgiving. Off-hits and mis-hits still travel a long way.The 'System 60' and 'Pro Series' shafts feel a little heavy, but not enough to affect play. From the beginning, I have used a stiff flex and these shafts lived up to my expectations. Recently, I had my Hawk Eye VFTs re-shafted with the Fujikura Fit-On E270 Flex-S shafts. The Fujikuras weigh 66-68 grams and they have a mid/high kick point. Now, my drives and shots fly slightly lower than with the factory shafts. Because most factory-installed shafts and grips are cheap, I highly recommend YOU get fitted for a custom shaft and grip to maximum your results. Only the club head has more effect on your distance and carry than the club shaft. It is the ENGINE that drives the car.The Callaway factory grips are thinner than the comics in a Sunday newspaper. Consequently, I replaced them with GripMaster one-piece leather grips. GripMaster is the tackiest, best feeling grip I have ever used.The metallic finish on the crown of the VFTs hides scuffs and sky marks better than darker colors. However, the colors on the soles disappear relatively quickly. Still, the soles look good hundreds of rounds later. The club faces show wear, but not terribly.Although the head covers are ugly, fragile and short-lived at best, they actually go on and off quickly and easily. They take up very little space on or off of the clubs. However, the head covers have a foamy consistency and they seem to literally disintegrate over time as well as fade like Dracula at sunrise.About a year ago, I sold my VFT woods after purchasing the newer Callaway X fairway woods. While the VFT woods are long from the fairway, they are so large and light that they literally float on top of deep rough. As a result, if you regularly play courses with deep rough, you will need fairway woods with smaller, lower profile heads like the X woods. They cut through rough for solid contact. However, if you play courses with light to moderate rough and generous fairways, the VFT woods would be right at home.I just recently purchased VFT 3, 5 and 7 fairway woods, again. While I don't notice very much difference in distance, although the ball flight with the X fairway woods is somewhat lower. On courses with generous fairways and light to moderate rough, I like having the option of added forgiveness with the VFT woods. Although the VFTs may be a little old, their technology still works.
